Feature-Length Documentary Film Premiere

Earlier this year, Vivek composed the music score for Plague at the Golden Gate, a riveting film describing the desperate race against time to contain a deadly disease, bubonic plague, discovered in San Francisco at the turn of the 20th Century. The documentary will premiere Tuesday night, May 24th, at 9 pm on PBS (as part of the "American Experience" series), and on streaming platforms. Check your local listings for additional show times.

The events depicted in the film take place in the early 1900s, and the documentary explores the scientific challenges and social issues of the time that complicated the struggle to contain the disease. As one might expect, the film subtly invites audiences to draw connections to the present-day furor around the COVID-19 pandemic -- making the subject quite relevant today.

You can listen to select excerpts of Vivek's nearly 2-hour orchestral music score here.

Animated Feature Film

A few months ago, Vivek composed the music score for Warner Bros.' Cowboy Up!, a feature-length animated musical starring the classic cat-and-mouse duo, Tom and Jerry. The story, set in the late 19th-Century American "Wild West," pays homage to (and furtively subverts) archetypal Western tropes from American cinema. The music score honors the traditions of Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiompkin, and Aaron Copland -- but through the lens of Vivek's distinctive harmonic language and orchestration style.

The film premiered in January and is currently available for streaming on major platforms. You can hear select excerpts from the music score here.

Suspense Thriller

Early this year, Vivek composed the music score (and co-wrote the theme song) for the feature film Mid-Century, starring Stephen Lang (Avatar), Shane West (A Walk to Remember), and Bruce Dern (Nebraska). Lionsgate will release the film on June 17th in select theaters as well as on streaming platforms. The Los Angeles premiere will be held on June 2nd. Look for it at a theater near you!

Ostensibly a supernatural thriller, the film's subtext examines what is hidden in the shadows of the American fascination with the "mid-century modern" aesthetic.

Vivek's music score combines mid-20th-Century techniques (like microtonality, musique concréte, tone clusters, aleatory, polytonality) with traditional melodic and modern constructs -- reflecting the story's exploration of social themes.

You can hear select excerpts from the music score here.

New Animated Musical

Recently, Vivek completed the 75-minute music score for the Warner Bros. feature film, Snowman's Land, once again starring the inimitable Tom and Jerry cat-and-mouse duo. It's a holiday movie is in style of a vintage Hollywood musical, replete with big-band orchestra and strings. Vivek co-wrote the songs for the film as well. Snowman's Land is set to premiere later this year.

Stay tuned!

Other Work

Vivek has accepted a composer-in-residence appointment for the Fall 2022 term at Columbia College Chicago, where he will teach graduate students in the Scoring for Media (MFA) program, as well as an undergraduate music composition course.

In June, Vivek will travel to Sweden with the String Theory performance ensemble, to perform a site-specific opera performance, Frozen Waterfall, with Studio Gathenhielm.

Since 2021, Vivek has been writing a column called In Theory for Stereogum, where he analyzes new music (mostly pop tunes) from the perspective of a composer/producer -- intended for musicians and non-musicians alike. In his column, he explores methods and concepts in music creation (like harmony, rhythm, scales and modes, consonance/dissonance, production techniques, etc.) whenever a topic arises deemed sufficiently interesting for a general audience. Check it out!

Emmy Win

Vivek just won the Daytime Emmy Award in the category of "Outstanding Music Direction and Composition" for his music on the Warner Bros. animated series The Tom and Jerry Show -- Vivek's fourth consecutive Emmy win in the category. This year's award is for Vivek's music for the Season 4 episode titled, "Ball of Fire" -- a throwback to classic hard-boiled detective fiction (a la Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett), featuring Vivek's signature romantic, jazz-infused music.

You can listen to select excerpts of Vivek's music from The Tom and Jerry Show here.

Peabody Award

In June, the riveting 5-hour documentary series, Asian Americans, won the Peabody Award, one of the most prestigious honors in broadcast journalism. The sweeping historical series chronicles over two centuries of immigration themes related to the evolving identity, contributions, and challenges experienced by Asian Americans in the United States. The series explores bold, new perspectives that recalibrate the way we look at those experiences, and reveals the vital role of Asian Americans in shaping American history and identity.

Vivek composed over 4 hours of music for the series' 5 episodes. The score takes you on an epic ride, traversing gritty 19th-Century American textures and elegant European Romantic motifs, 20th-Century jazz, and modern-day electronica. Additionally, you can hear splashes of musical color from places as varied as Japan, Philippines, Korea, China, and India -- all threaded into a cohesive musical fabric that eschews temporal and geographic boundaries.

An 84-minute soundtrack album, containing excerpts from the score, is available on all platforms (Spotify, iTunes, etc.), and the series is streamable (on PBS, iTunes, Amazon, etc.).

New Feature-Length Animated Musical

Vivek recently completed the music score for a new Warner Bros. animated musical film, Cowboy Up!. As part of the Tom and Jerry franchise, the film features the familiar cat and mouse, but in a classic "Western" setting. Premiere dates will be announced soon. Stay tuned!

Emmy Award

Vivek has won a Creative Arts Emmy Award in the category of "Outstanding Music Direction and Composition" for his work on the Warner Bros. animated series The Tom and Jerry Show. This was Vivek's third consecutive Emmy nomination and second consecutive win. This award was based on Vivek's music for the Season 2 episode titled, "Kitten Grifters." The episode is a throwback to classic hard-boiled detective fiction (a la Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett) and features Vivek's signature romantic, jazz-infused orchestral music (with occasional surprises veering into hip-hop and other musical landscapes). This year, Vivek shared the award with his colleagues, Steve Morrell and John Van Tongeren, whose music can be heard on some of the other episodes in the season. The cartoon features the well-known characters of the classic show, but with all-new stories and animation, and contains wall-to-wall music along the lines of the original.

Vivek also received an Annie Award nomination earlier this year for his music on the show.

You can listen to select excerpts of Vivek's music from The Tom and Jerry Show here.

Presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the 45th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony was held May 3-5, 2019.

Netflix Documentary

Late last year, Vivek composed the music score for a new documentary titled All in My Family, which just premiered, May 3rd, on Netflix. It's a personal, eye-opening film narrated by director Hao Wu about cultural identity, family pressure, and acceptance. The subject matter is too nuanced and varied to describe in depth here, but you can check it out by streaming the film now.

Vivek's music score is eccentric and buoyant, sometimes playing against picture, framing the story in surprising ways. You can listen to excerpts of the music score here.

Vivek's work dovetails with that of one of the show's sound designers, Grammy-winning recording/mix engineer and songwriter/musician Dan Blessinger.

Vivek's score music on the show is steeped in the traditions of the classic cartoon, but also infuses modern aesthetics creating a unique amalgam that is harmonically rich, rhythmically agile, and dramatically sensitive. The music moves fluidly between 19th-Century European Romanticism, 20th-Century American jazz, and present-day idioms eschewing cultural and geographical boundaries.

Directed by Bann Roy, the #WhyIMake videos feature diverse people such as NASA astronaut Don Pettit, discussing what itÍs like to be a maker in space; Adam Savage, co-host and executive producer of MythBusters; Atari founder Nolan Bushnell and his family; actor, author, and woodworker Nick Offerman.

Feature Film Now Streaming

The feature film White Sun is now streaming online at outlets such as Amazon.com. Vivek's music for the film plays with a light touch, obliquely supporting this delicate and superbly crafted political drama/dark comedy set high in the Himalayas. White Sun won the Interfilm Award at the Venice Film Festival and has received rave reviews from the Hollywood Reporter, Variety, BBC, New York Times, and elsewhere.

Directed by Deepak Rauniyar (Highway) and edited by David Barker (Daylight, Here), the film's production team includes Joslyn Barnes (Shadow World, This Changes Everything) and Danny Glover (The Color Purple, Lethal Weapon).

You can hear Vivek's closing music from the film here.

Music for Interactive Documentary

A few months ago, Vivek composed music for the K-TOWN '92 interactive documentary, directed by Grace Lee (American Revolutionary, The Grace Lee Project). K-TOWN '92 explores the impact and legacy of the Los Angeles riots/rebellion/civil unrest 25 years later through a diverse range of stories from Koreatown and beyond.

When you visit the K-TOWN '92 site, you select from a mosaic of characters, archival and news footage, and prompts that enable you to hear from communities of color whose stories have been widely unheard and ignored.

Furthermore, select episodes in past and present episodes feature songs (in the tradition of timeless Hollywood musicals), co-written by Vivek with Dan Blessinger.

Vivek's score music on the show is steeped in the traditions of the classic cartoon, but also infuses modern aesthetics creating a unique amalgam that is harmonically rich, rhythmically agile, and dramatically sensitive.
